Eleanor Roosevelt said, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.”

Writing is a way to look fear in the face.

I’ve been through some terrifying situations. I was diagnosed as disabled at 18, a stroke, brain surgery, learning how to walk again, learning how to write again, a painful pregnancy and I have published poems and essays about every one of these topics in my life. Writing about my struggles helped me survive them

I believe that the act of creative writing can help you gain strength, gain courage and gain confidence because you face your own fear.

Today I went to a general surgeon expecting one result, and I got another. My husband said, “I’m sorry.” I said, “I’m fine.” I knew I could handle my emotions through writing — and modern medicine will handle the rest.
